DEA-registered facilities cannot simply discard or flush controlled substances. Our mailback program through Trilogy Medwaste provides a fully compliant solution with no truck pickup required. Your facility receives a secure bin, fills it, and mails it back using pre-paid FedEx labels included with the kit.
Who Needs This Program?
Any DEA-registered facility generating waste from scheduled controlled substances (Schedule II-V) must dispose of them through a DEA-authorized mailback program. This includes:
- Medical clinics and physician practices
- Dental offices administering controlled sedatives or anesthetics
- Veterinary practices using scheduled controlled substances
- Pharmacies with expired or unused controlled stock
- Long-term care and assisted living facilities
- Surgery centers and specialty practices
How the Mailback Program Works
Step 1: Get Started
Contact us with your DEA registration certificate and bin size preference. We complete the Trilogy Medwaste order form and submit everything on your behalf.
Step 2: Bin Ships to You
Once processed, Trilogy ships your secure disposal bin via FedEx. We send you the tracking number when available. Allow a couple of weeks for delivery.
Step 3: Fill Your Bin
Fill your bin with controlled substance waste at your own pace. If it is not full yet, hold onto it until ready. The bin comes with mailing labels, packaging instructions, and an inventory sheet.
Step 4: Submit Inventory Form
List every drug and quantity on the included inventory sheet and email it to Trilogy for approval before mailing. Facilities with Schedule II drugs will also receive a separate form by mail.
Step 5: Mail Your Bin
After inventory approval, package your bin per the included instructions and ship using the pre-paid FedEx labels provided with your kit.
Step 6: Certificate of Destruction
Trilogy incinerates bins in large batches, so certificates may take up to 2 months. We monitor your certificate through the Trilogy portal and deliver it to you when ready. Trilogy does not send certificates directly to customers.

Getting enrolled is simple. Here is what we need from you:
DEA Certificate
A copy of your current DEA registration certificate. We recommend saving it with the expiration date in the file name for easy compliance tracking.
Bin Size Choice
Choose the bin size that fits your controlled substance waste volume. We can help you pick the right size based on your facility type and usage.
That Is It
We handle the Trilogy order form and submission, follow up on shipping, and track your certificate of destruction on your behalf.
All DEA mailback disposal is handled in full compliance with DEA regulations under 21 CFR Part 1317. Controlled substances are incinerated by Trilogy Medwaste, a DEA-authorized collector.
