Why “Deleted” Isn’t Destroyed

Formatted drives still hold recoverable data. Forensic tools can reconstruct files from drives wiped 3–7 times. Physical destruction is the only zero-risk option.

The risk is real: A 2019 Blancco study found recoverable data on 42% of used hard drives purchased on the secondary market — including financial records, passwords, and personal health information. Physical destruction eliminates this risk entirely.
💽

All Drive Types

HDDs, SSDs, NVMe, thumb drives, flash drives, tapes, optical media (CDs/DVDs), mobile devices. If it stores data, we destroy it.

🔨

Physical Shredding

Industrial shredders physically destroy platters, chips, and media into non-recoverable particles. No degaussing-only — actual physical destruction.

📋

Serial Number Documentation

We document the serial number of every drive before destruction. Your Certificate of Destruction includes a full asset list — critical for DOD, HIPAA, and NIST compliance.

♻️

Responsible Recycling

Destroyed media is processed by certified e-recyclers. No landfill. Recycling certificates available on request for sustainability reporting.

Compliance Standards We Satisfy

Physical hard drive destruction is required by multiple federal regulations.

🏥

HIPAA

HHS requires electronic PHI on decommissioned devices to be destroyed so it cannot be retrieved. Physical shredding is the highest-compliance method.

💼

NIST 800-88

The federal standard for media sanitization recommends physical destruction (shredding) as the most secure method for sensitive data on SSDs and flash storage.

🏦

GLBA Safeguards Rule

Financial institutions must securely dispose of customer information. Physical drive destruction satisfies FTC Safeguards Rule requirements for media containing financial data.

📊

SOX & SEC Rules

Public company financial records on decommissioned hardware must be securely destroyed. Physical destruction with documented serial numbers satisfies auditor requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our shredding services.

Why not just wipe or overwrite the drive?

Software wiping can satisfy some compliance requirements for lower-sensitivity data, but for HIPAA, NIST 800-88, and DOD-level data, physical destruction is the recommended (and sometimes required) method. SSDs in particular are extremely difficult to wipe completely due to wear-leveling algorithms — physical shredding eliminates the uncertainty.

Do you provide a Certificate of Destruction with drive serial numbers?

Yes. Every drive is inventoried before destruction — serial numbers, make, model, and drive type are documented. Your Certificate of Destruction includes the full asset manifest. This is essential for HIPAA breach prevention documentation and IT asset disposition records.

Can I watch my hard drives being destroyed?

Yes. We offer witnessed destruction at our facility or on-site at your location with our mobile destruction equipment. Request witnessed destruction when you book and we’ll schedule accordingly.

What if I have drives that were already “wiped” — do you still need to physically destroy them?

For HIPAA, NIST, and most regulated environments: yes. Software wipes leave recoverable data, especially on SSDs. Physical destruction is the only way to guarantee zero recovery risk. We’ll destroy them regardless of prior wipe status.

How many drives can you handle at once?

Any volume — from a single laptop drive to a data center decommission with thousands of drives. For large-volume projects, contact us for a custom quote and scheduling.
