OSHA Requirements & Proper Segregation
OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires that sharps be placed in closable, puncture-resistant, leak-proof containers at the point of use — not carried across a room in a gloved hand. Containers must be replaced before they reach the manufacturer’s fill line (typically 3/4 full) and never overfilled or forced closed. Sharps must be segregated from general trash, red-bag biohazard waste, and pharmaceutical waste at all times, since mixing waste streams can trigger stricter (and more expensive) disposal requirements for the entire load.
Mail-Back vs. Scheduled Pickup
Low-volume generators — home health nurses, small practices, or occasional users — sometimes use mail-back sharps disposal kits, where a sealed container is shipped to a treatment facility. For most healthcare businesses, though, scheduled pickup is more cost-effective and eliminates shipping paperwork.
