RMW Definition by State
Regulated medical waste (RMW) is defined slightly differently in each state we serve. Broadly, it covers waste generated during diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of humans or animals that is capable of transmitting disease. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Kentucky each maintain their own list of covered categories and generator registration or reporting rules, which we track so your facility stays compliant no matter which state you operate in.
RMW Categories
RMW is generally divided into four categories: sharps (needles, scalpels, broken glass), infectious/biohazard waste (blood, OPIM-contaminated materials, cultures), pathological waste (tissue, organs, body parts), and trace chemotherapy waste (items lightly contaminated with chemo drugs, such as empty vials and used PPE).
