What Qualifies as Infectious Waste
Infectious waste — also called regulated medical waste under most state definitions — includes any material capable of causing an infectious disease. Under EPA guidance and most state health department rules, this includes cultures and stocks of infectious agents, blood and blood products, pathological waste, sharps, isolation waste from patients with communicable diseases, and contaminated animal carcasses from labs. Proper Packaging: Red Bags & Rigid Containers
Infectious waste must be packaged to prevent leakage, puncture, and spread of contamination during storage and transport. Soft waste (dressings, gowns, gloves) goes into red or orange biohazard bags labeled with the universal biohazard symbol. Liquid or semi-liquid infectious waste needs rigid, leak-proof containers. Bags must be securely tied — never overfilled — and placed inside a rigid outer container for transport once they leave the point of generation.
Storage Time Limits
Most states impose maximum storage times for infectious waste before pickup, often 7 days at room temperature or up to 30 days if refrigerated below 32-45°F, depending on the state. Treatment Methods: Autoclave & Incineration
Infectious waste is rendered non-infectious through one of two primary treatment methods before final disposal: steam autoclaving, which uses pressurized steam to sterilize waste, or incineration, which is required for pathological and certain trace-chemotherapy waste.
